First Look at King Of The Hill 2025

On Thursday, October 24th we got our first look into the 2025 Reboot of King of The Hill.

The much beloved Fox animated series was first rumored to return to television in 2022 with the addition of a Mike Judge animated movie off the success of the new Beavis and Butthead movie which garnered its own modern-day television series revival. In January of 2023, after the series revival and movie still had yet to come to fruition, Hulu announced that they would be picking up a revival of King of The Hill with the majority of the original voice actors reprinting their roles. However in September of 2023, production was up in the air as while working on the new series, The original voice actor Dale Gribble who reprised his role, Johnny Hardwick, would unexpectedly and tragically pass away at the age of 64. This left many to speculate on how the animated series would deal with this loss moving forward if Dale’s voice would be recast, AI-generated, or potentially even cause production to stop. While we still do not have full clarity on who will be taking up the mantle of Dale Gribble for the King Of The Hill Return, on October 24th, 2024 we got our first glimpse at some of the modern-day character design that will feature in the series!

The inscription reads as follows

ABOUT THE CHEF

Chef Bobby Hill has loved food his whole life. From weeknights around the dinner table eating his mom’s “Spa-Peggy and Meatballs” to overindulging in lutefisk at church potlucks, to celebrations with family and friends at Luby’s Cafeteria, food and the people it’s enjoyed with are the foundation for his best memories. In fact, his career as a robata chef was inspired by his most cherished memory of all-weekends spent grilling with his dad.

A self-taught chef and one of the youngest contestants on King of the Grill, Chef Hill believes “good food can solve any problem.” He draws on the influences of his childhood by combining classic Texas dishes with flavors from around the world. With Robata Chane, Chef Hill hopes to honor the art of Japanese robata and the German heritage of the Texas Hill Country while pushing culinary boundaries through his innovative fusion dishes.

Nancy Hicks Gribble

Following the post, Grey DeLisle also shared a screenshot of what appeared to be a character design board still in development. While this post did not include a detailed bio or even a nameplate, the design is extremely similar to that of Nancy Hicks Gribble.

What are Mike Judge’s plans for Dale Gribble?

Voice actor Johnny Hardwick‘s untimely passing has left fans wondering what the future holds for Dale Gribble in the King of The Hill Reboot.

On January 31st 2023, much to the delight of the fanbase, Hulu confirmed that they had ordered a new season of the hit animated series King Of The Hill to be produced. Creators, Mike Judge and Greg Daniels, had notably been vocal in advocating a rebirth for the franchise for over a decade since the shows cancellation in 2010. The community and crew alike immediately began ramping up the hype for the newly renewed series as the remaining original voice actors prepared to slip back into their iconic animated characters. However, during the production of this reboot a tragedy took place on August 8th 2023 as Voice actor Johnny Hardwick, known for portraying the voice of Dale Gribble, a key character in the series, passed away at the age of 64.

Upon the news breaking, both Hulu and 20th Television Animation refused to comment on the future of the Dale Gribble Character. As reported by TVLine  Hardwick had recorded “a couple” of episodes for the upcoming revival However The exact number of episodes is unknown.

The question now becomes how will Mike Judge and Greg Daniels address this matter. Previously, The series saw the loss of Brittany Murphy, the voice actor behind Luanne, in 2009 before the series finale. While all the episodes scheduled for the last season had already been recorded and aired as schedule, it has been highly debated since the rumors of the reboot began if we would be seeing a recast Luanne Platter. Many fans of the series took to the forums to argue the character of Luanne could easily be written out in an effort to honor Brittany’s work. This problem now becomes while this argument may seemingly be an option for secondary and tertiary characters like Luanne and Lucky (Voiced by the late Tom Petty) The creators would have a harder time getting around arguably one of the man 4 characters in Dale.

While it’s not exactly something the series is known for, there have been a handful of recasting’s, most notably in the case of John Redcorn who was initially voiced by Victor Aaron before being replaced by the now Jonathan Joss. While some may find it as a slight to Hardwick, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, Especially when it ensures the continued existence of a beloved character. With Dale Gribble being arguably one of the most impersonated voices already amongst internet culture, it is not unreasonable to believe this is the most realistic route for the rebirth of KOTH.

On the flip side, with a handful of episodes already recorded the much more dramatic and uncomfortably real route would be to have the comedically unhealthy, chain-smoking, Gribble to pass on alongside his voice actor in the KOTH universe. While this might be a hard sell for the community, it would certainly keep the series grounded and respectful. Alternatively, an episode centered around Dale Gribble having to give up smoking due to his deteriorating health and noticeable changes to his voice would work as a nice neat middle ground as to explaining a slight tone difference a new voice actor might bring.

Whatever route Jude and Daniels end up taking we know they will have all the respect and love in the world put towards Dale Gribble as to show respect to their late friend Johnny Hardwick. With this series set to pick back up 15 years later in modern day, all of these routes are given a little more time to flesh out how the modern day Arlen looks come 2024.

2023 King of The Hill Reboot Breakdown

The following is everything we currently know surrounding the reboot of the popular Fox series King of The Hill coming in 2023.

Seemingly since its cancellation, the audience has been clamoring for a return of Mike Judge’s beloved King of The Hill series. The rumor mill began turning in 2017 as the cast reunited alongside creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels for the show’s 20th-anniversary at San Francisco Sketchfest.

Since Judge’s success with the HBO-ordered movie and subsequent revival of Beavis and Butthead, it seemed like only a matter of time before we saw KOTH follow suit. With both Daniels and Judge openly and vocally in favor of some form of reboot or revival for the show, fans remained optimistic the Arlen gang would get a second life. In 2021 another big announcement broke from show writer Brett Forrester when he was asked if there were any plans for a possible King Of The Hill return during a Reddit AMA. He responded with the following, “I am sure Greg Daniels and Mike Judge will murder me for sharing this but… HELL YES. They are in hot negotiations to bring back King of the Hill.” With this, the internet went absolutely wild as it seemed now we were cooking with propane.

Fast forward to January 31st, 2023 and Hulu announced they had ordered a revival of the beloved series. At the current moment, it appears the majority of the original voice cast will be returning to reprise their respective roles including of course Hank Hill (Mike Judge), Bill Dauterive (Stephen Root), Dale Gribble (Johnny Hardwick), Jeff Boomhauer (also Mike Judge),  Peggy Hill (Kathy Najimy), Bobby Hill (Pamela Adlon), and Minh Souphanousinphone (Lauren Tom), As expressed by Deadline.

Characters NOT Confirmed

As of now, we only know the returning characters via their voice actors’ involvement. Unfortunately, real life happens and in 2009 voice actor Brittany Murphy passed away at the age of 32. Her role as Luanne Platter, Peggy’s niece, is one that is very much still up in the air with Judge not yet commenting if he has plans for a replacement voice actor to continue the character. However, this isn’t out of the realm of possibility as we saw in 1997 with Jonathan Joss taking over the role of John Redcorn following the untimely passing of original voice actor Victor Aaron.

Alongside Luanne, poetically, is the case of her husband Lucky who was famously voiced by the late Tom Petty. While Lucky’s role can be argued as a more minor one, later seasons began including him more frequently in gang hijinks as well as his own stories within the show.

On another note, there does seem to be one glaring, living, omission from the confirmed cast list. While his wife Minh is slated to return, Hank’s foil, Khan Souphanousinphone ( Toby Huss) is not mentioned. While he most definitely has the more prominent role of the two, the issue is suspected to be one behind the sense with cancel culture. While Kahn is famously Laotian, just ask Cotton Hill, His voice actor Toby Huss is not of any form of Asian descent. With the recent recasting of characters like The Simpsons Apu getting major blowback, this may be seen as a topic of contention for the relaunch. Whether this means finding a different voice actor or simply not shining a light on the character until the show is running remains to be seen.

Everything We Know About The King Of The Hill Reboot

While not much has been brought to the public yet, here is everything we know about the KOTH reboot.

Originally airing from 1997-2010 over 13 seasons, King Of The Hill left its devoted audience craving more. Over the past decade, fans have been speculating and fantasizing about what Arlen life has been like since the final scene wrapped. The answer to that question may finally be upon the horizon as series creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels have been reported to be reviving the series by The Hollywood Reporter. The duo is set to oversee the creation and production of the revival under their new animation company, Bandera Entertainment. This announcement follows the revival of Judge’s other popular series Beavis and Butthead, which has been picked up for a new movie coming to paramount+ set in 2022. The movie is set to also be followed by the TV series reboot, however, a time frame for this has yet to be announced.

While Judge has been rather vocal about the return of Beavis and Butthead, it would seem the King Of The Hill project is still being kept close to the chest. Reports of the reboot first came about during a Reddit AMA in 2021 with show writer Brett Forrester when he was asked if there are any plans on a possible King Of The Hill return. Forrester told the Redditor, “I am sure Greg Daniels and Mike Judge will murder me for sharing this but… HELL YES. They are in hot negotiations to bring back King of the Hill.” It would seem as though all the stars seem to be aligning and aligning very soon. While it is still unclear whether or not the show’s return will be set in 2022, it seems rather likely considering Judge’s similar move with Beavis and Butthead, as well as the trend brought about by the most recent South Park special on Paramount+.

While Judge and Garcia are seemingly keeping the majority of announcements under wraps at the moment, we are eagerly waiting for an official statement on the reboot of one of our favorite series. What do you think will be the setting of the KOTH reboot, let us know down below!
