WSRR Radio: The New Home of Underground Radio

On January 8th, 2024 StylesRebelRadio.com announced their venture into Radio. The following is a release from Style on the matter.

It has certainly been a hectic 24 hours, and more than that behind the scenes, so I decided I would offer this release to answer some of the questions I have received since the announcement of WSRR Radio.

First and foremost this decision did not come overnight, there were many internal meetings about the next logical steps for StylesRebelRadio.com between all of its members. Over a year ago the initial idea was floated about potentially rehoming The Rebel Radio Show on a new station based on some differing opinions in the direction CBW was headed at the time and some of the moves made with advertising, more on that later. While we tossed around ideas like a Roku Channel, Twitch, or even Another station, what made the most sense at the end of the day was for us to finally double down and make WSRR Radio a reality.

When this decision came about I wanted to ensure this wasn’t going to be the same programming you could find on any dial nor a formatless abyss of music. The initial concept was to stream all of the WSRR Podcasts centralized on one station, an idea which we are still working out a format for. However, as mentioned in the announcement video sometimes you need to go back to your roots. As a show that began on Underground radio, it’s only fitting we come back to finish what we started. Doing The Rock Revival every week on CBW gave me the opportunity to reach out to amazing local and independent artists like Jet Star, Gavin Michales, Year of Octiber, The Daze and so many more. More often than not it was this aspect of the show that kept me excited to get into the studio each week. This is an ideology that quickly showed as well as the level of support and excitement from the listening audience was insurmountable and vocal, to say the least. I’ve always believed the music scene is alive and well despite what you hear on terrestrial radio. The same 5 songs from 30 decades ago should not define Rock Music just as overproduced vulgarity should not define modern pop. It became evident very quickly there was a void in the local, underground, independent music scene in terms of radio that desperately needed to be filled. If anyone was going to do it, it certainly wouldn’t be the place we came from. This was the major driving force behind the decision to format WSRR Radio like we have.

NONE of this is possible without the amazing and talented people who make WSRR a reality with me. Shayne, Julez, Evan, and Jake are all monumental in making this possible. As are the incredible artists I’ve been able to work with to share this amazing body of work with all of you.

A common question I have been asked over the years is about the products we advertised for on The Rebel Radio Show and CBW Radio. To answer this, we have never promoted something we did not believe in. Both Raze Energy and SurfShark VPN were actively used by the members of The Rebel Radio Show, SurfShark is still used on the main WSRR PC in fact. We never promoted Crypto, NFTs, or any other form of digital currency scams or pyramid schemes despite an effort for us to run commercials involving them or promote other shows sponsored by them. We have not and will not compromise our morals for advertising.

In closing, I would like to thank everyone who has listened to The Rebel Radio Show, The Rebel Podcast, or any of our WSRR-produced shows in the past 4 years. You make all of this possible. Thank you to CBW for hosting our program for the past three years, and thank you to all of the amazing artists who are allowing us to broadcast their music worldwide for the betterment of local and independent music. This is just the beginning and there is plenty more to come! Monday will showcase the first LIVE broadcast on WSRR Radio at 5pm Eastern, I hope you all will join us as The Rebel Radio Show returns to live radio. If there are more questions I am sure we will be able to shed some clarity to them On Air. Below you will also find the WSRR Radio announcement for more info about the station!

Thank you all.

Meet Year Of October

Year of October is an on-the-rise independent band based out of Nashville that has heavily featured on CBW Radio over the past three weeks, but who exactly are they?

Introduced to CBW Radio via the Independent Spotlight during The Rock Revival, Year of October has quickly become a fan favorite amongst listeners of the station. Capturing both a classic rock and modern sound, Year of October’s featured tracks off of Wastelands have found a home on Fridays as well as regular CBW Programing. Upon reaching out to the band, I was able to secure further information about this incredible act and just who they are.

Who is Year of October?

Year of October is Phlecia Sullivan, Josh Sullivan, and James Varner.” The band was formed by Phlecia and Josh While attending the University of Kentucky in 2010. The name comes from “When Phlecia and I (Josh) first started playing music… I was playing acoustic guitar and she was singing and it had a campfire music kind of vibe. Phlecia came up with the name based on that feeling of fall.”

How would you describe your sound?

“We’d describe our sound as fuzz, rock, soul. I would say that our music combines rock, soul, and blues; We’ve put out 4 records now and each record has continued to change and evolve (our sound)”

Who have been your biggest influences?

“We like a lot of different music, Some of our favorites include Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Amy Winehouse, Black Sabbath, Jack White, Dead Weather, Otis Redding, Sam Cooke, The Budos Band, and Charles Bradley.”

Year of October can be heard regularly on CBW Radio where Josh describes, “It’s definitely an honor for us to be showcased… It’s an awesome station and we are truly very thankful.” As well as on any major streaming service such as Spotify or iTunes.

You can also catch Year of October live in Nashville, TN at Drifter’s BBQ on May 14th as well as Kimbro’s in Franklin, TN on May 25th!

The Rise of Underground Music Due to COVID-19

Eastbayexpress.com

The old is becoming new again. Repeated and processed music on mainstream radio stations are dying. With people being quarantined because of COVID-19, they are beginning to grow tired of the same song being played every 30 minutes while they’re on a drive. Therefore, underground music is making a colossal rise in popularity.

There is a large population of Americans in the current state that we are living in that have grown old to hearing the same manufactured junk that is produced by large corporations only used to make profit. The public knows that the art of creative writing has died in places like Hollywood and Nashville. Because they know this, a new musical renaissance has begun varying amongst all different genres. New styles are being created and the old is returning. Beautiful art has been returning for a while but now it is finally being recognized and we are all glad to see it.

Amazon.com/Music

Since the beginning of its start, YouTube has become the largest website for promoting upcoming and rising musicians. It is where record companies and famous musicians look when they want to find someone new. Some of the most famous musicians on mainstream radio started out on YouTube. Examples are Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber. These artists however, were in the old days of modern music. As stated in the previous paragraphs, mainstream radio is dying and people are going back to the old ways of discovering art, and the way that most are doing that is through YouTube.

Examples of Growing Artists and Genres

1.) Zach Bryan

This rising country/folk musician began his musical journey on the internet when he posted a live solo version of his song “Heading South” on September 6th, 2019. Since that post, he has earned over 4 million views on YouTube and 7.5 million downloads on Spotify.

2.) Billy Strings

Combining the genres of bluegrass, folk, and metal, Billy Strings began his musical popularity when he posted a solo acoustic version of his song “Dust In A Baggie” on YouTube around a decade ago. That song randomly began appearing in people’s recommended during the start of 2020 and since then, that song has over 11 million views on YouTube and 3.5 million downloads on Spotify.

Electro Swing

“The Roaring 20s are back!” This style of music originated before the 2020s but now that the time has finally come, this criminally underrated genre of music is enough to get you out of you chair and dance along. The old vinyl sound of the original swing songs mixed with the new wave of music production has turned thousands of people on with its creativity. Following this genre and originating in Germany, the style of Electro Swing dance has grown massively in popularity due to people being quarantined and dying of boredom. There are hundreds of electro swing playlists out there and dozens of 24/7 YouTube livestreams. Creativity has struck the eyes of many artists with this genre.
